Segments

How to use: Create a new segment by clicking "New Segment" or "Create Segment" in the Segments module. Name your segment clearly to describe the group, such as "Active Customers Last 30 Days" or "Leads from Website Form." Choose between dynamic (updates automatically) or static (fixed list at creation time) segment types—dynamic segments are usually more useful. Define segment criteria by adding conditions using the condition builder—select fields like "Email Status," "Last Purchase Date," or "Contact Source." Combine multiple conditions using AND/OR logic: "Location is San Francisco AND Last Purchase within 30 days" creates a precise segment. Use date-based conditions for time-sensitive segments like "Birthday this month" or "Account created over 1 year ago"—these update automatically as dates change. Filter by behavioral data such as "Opened last 3 emails" or "Clicked link in campaign" to find engaged contacts. Include or exclude contacts based on tags by adding tag conditions—"Has tag: VIP" or "Does not have tag: Unsubscribed." Set numerical conditions for values like "Total purchases greater than $500" or "Number of support tickets equals 0." Preview segment results before saving by clicking "Preview"—see how many contacts match and review a sample list. Save the segment to make it available throughout the system for targeted campaigns, reports, and automation. Use segments for targeted email broadcasts by selecting the segment as your recipient list when creating campaigns. Apply segments in reports to analyze specific customer groups—compare behavior across different segments. Update segment criteria anytime by editing the segment—dynamic segments automatically recalculate membership. View segment growth over time using the segment analytics dashboard showing how membership numbers change. Export segment members by clicking "Export Contacts" to get a list of everyone currently in that segment. Nest segments by creating conditions like "Is in segment: Active Customers" combined with other criteria for complex targeting. Delete segments that are no longer useful, but note that automations or campaigns using that segment may need updating.
